Independent Medical Examinations (IME)

What to expect.

AnchorPointe Counselling Group provides independent psychological examinations (IMEs) to address questions about an individual’s mental health, functioning, and treatment needs. These assessments provide objective clinical opinions for use in insurance, employment, disability, and legal matters.

Each assessment is guided by the referral questions and conducted with professionalism, impartiality, and respect for the individual being assessed.

Purpose of the Assessment

An independent psychological examination provides a clinical opinion based on a detailed interview, standardized psychological measures, and a review of relevant documentation.

Depending on the referral, an assessment may address:

  • Diagnostic clarification.
  • The nature, severity, and course of psychological symptoms.
  • The relationship between psychological conditions and identified events or injuries.
  • The impact of symptoms on daily activities and occupational functioning.
  • Psychological abilities, limitations, and restrictions.
  • The appropriateness of previous or current treatment.
  • Recommendations for further treatment or rehabilitation.
  • Prognosis and anticipated recovery.

The scope is established before the assessment to ensure the evaluation addresses the questions being asked.

The Assessment Process

Referral and Scope

The process begins with a review of the referral questions and available background information. We clarify the purpose of the examination, the intended use of the report, and any specific assessment requirements.

Records Review

Your psychologist reviews relevant available records, which may include medical documentation, treatment reports, previous assessments, and information about the events or circumstances under consideration.

This review helps establish the documented history and identifies areas requiring further exploration during the interview.

Explanation of the Process and Consent

Before proceeding, your psychologist explains the nature of the independent examination, confidentiality and its limits, and who will receive the report. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and complete the applicable consent documentation.

The psychologist’s role is to conduct an independent assessment and provide clinical opinions. The examination does not establish an ongoing treatment relationship.

Clinical Interview and Psychological Measures

The examination includes a detailed interview addressing your background, symptoms, relevant events, treatment history, and current functioning. Particular attention is given to how your difficulties have developed over time and their effect on daily activities, relationships, and work.

Standardized psychological measures are selected according to the referral questions. These measures contribute to the evaluation of symptoms, functioning, and the reliability and interpretability of the assessment findings.

No special preparation is required. You are encouraged to provide an accurate account of your experiences, including your difficulties, retained abilities, and current activities.

Assessment Report

Your psychologist integrates the interview findings, psychological test results, and available documentation into a written report for the referring party.

The report addresses the referral questions, explains the basis for the clinical opinions, and identifies any limitations affecting the conclusions. Where information is incomplete or findings do not support a definitive opinion, this is stated.

An Independent and Balanced Approach

An independent examination requires consideration of all relevant information, including evidence that may support different explanations or conclusions. The psychologist’s opinions are based on the assessment findings and professional judgment, regardless of who requested or funded the examination.

We recognize that participating in an IME can be challenging. The process is explained clearly and conducted respectfully, with opportunities to ask questions, clarify information, and request breaks.

How the Assessment Is Used

The report provides clinical information to assist the referring party with decisions within its area of responsibility. The psychologist provides opinions about psychological matters; decisions regarding insurance coverage, benefit entitlement, employment, or legal outcomes remain with the responsible decision-maker.

An independent examination does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, recommendation, or outcome.
