Psycho-Educational Assessments

What to expect.

AnchorPointe Counselling Group provides psychoeducational assessments for children, adolescents, and adults seeking a clearer understanding of their learning strengths and difficulties. Whether you are seeking an assessment for yourself or your child, the goal is to explain the factors affecting learning and provide practical recommendations for support.

Assessments consider cognitive abilities, academic skills, educational history, and other factors that may influence performance at school, in postsecondary education, or in everyday life.

Purpose of the Assessment

A psychoeducational assessment may be helpful when you or your child experiences:

  • Persistent difficulties with reading, writing, or mathematics.
  • Academic progress that remains limited despite instruction and additional support.
  • A need for unusually high levels of time, effort, or assistance to complete schoolwork.
  • Difficulties remembering information, following instructions, or completing tasks efficiently.
  • Challenges managing increasing educational demands.
  • Uncertainty about learning needs or the most appropriate supports.

An assessment can help determine whether a specific learning disorder or another explanation accounts for these concerns. It can also clarify areas of strength and guide educational planning.

For adults, an assessment may help explain longstanding learning difficulties or provide updated information when returning to education or seeking accommodations.

The Assessment Process

Initial Consultation

The process begins with a discussion of your concerns, relevant background, and assessment goals. We determine whether our services are appropriate and explain the assessment’s scope, fees, and anticipated timeline.

If the assessment is intended for a school, postsecondary institution, examination body, or funding program, please discuss this with us before scheduling so that specific documentation requirements can be considered.

Background Information and Consent

Before proceeding, we explain the assessment process, confidentiality and its limits, and how the findings will be communicated. For children, we clarify consent requirements and explain the process in a developmentally appropriate way.

With appropriate consent, your psychologist reviews relevant information, which may include report cards, previous assessments, educational plans, and records of interventions or additional support.

Parents or caregivers contribute information about a child’s development and learning history. Input from teachers may also be requested. Adults provide their own history, supplemented by records or information from others where available and appropriate.

Interviews and Standardized Assessment

The assessment includes interviews and standardized tasks selected according to the individual’s age, needs, and referral questions.

Areas assessed typically include cognitive abilities and academic skills in reading, written expression, and mathematics. Additional measures may examine memory, attention, executive functioning, or emotional and behavioural concerns when relevant.

Your psychologist also considers educational opportunities, language background, health, and previous responses to instruction or intervention. Conclusions are based on the combined findings rather than a single test score.

No studying is required. We provide instructions before the appointment, and breaks are incorporated as needed.

Feedback and Recommendations

Your psychologist explains the findings, discusses any diagnoses, and provides individualized recommendations.

For children and adolescents, feedback is provided to parents or caregivers, with age-appropriate involvement of the young person. For adults, feedback focuses on understanding the learning profile and its implications for current goals.

Recommendations may include targeted instruction, learning strategies, assistive technology, accommodations, or further assessment.

Written Report

The findings are summarized in a written report, which may include:

  • Relevant developmental and educational history.
  • Cognitive and academic assessment results.
  • Identified learning strengths and areas of difficulty.
  • Diagnostic conclusions, where appropriate.
  • Recommendations for instruction, intervention, and accommodations.
  • Recommendations for further evaluation or consultation.

With appropriate consent, the report can be shared with educators, accessibility services, health professionals, or others involved in supporting you or your child.

An Individualized Approach

Learning difficulties can affect confidence, motivation, and participation. Our approach considers both assessment results and the individual’s experience of learning, including the effort required and the supports already in place.

The aim is to provide an accurate and useful understanding of learning needs, with recommendations that are relevant to the person’s educational setting and daily demands.

Understanding the Outcome

Whether or not a learning disorder is diagnosed, the assessment aims to clarify concerns and identify appropriate next steps.

A psychoeducational assessment does not automatically include a comprehensive evaluation for ADHD, autism, or every mental health condition. If these concerns arise, your psychologist will discuss whether additional assessment is appropriate.

Recommendations may support requests for educational services or accommodations. Eligibility and implementation remain subject to the requirements of the relevant institution or program.
