Psychological Diagnostic and Treatment Planning Assessments
AnchorPointe Counselling Group provides comprehensive psychological assessments for individuals seeking a clearer understanding of their mental health and guidance for treatment. Assessments are conducted with professionalism, sensitivity, and attention to each individual’s concerns, circumstances, and goals.
Purpose of the Assessment
A psychological assessment can help clarify the nature of your symptoms, determine whether a psychological diagnosis is appropriate, and identify recommendations for treatment and support. It also considers how your difficulties affect daily life, relationships, work, and overall well-being.
An assessment may be helpful if you:
- Are experiencing ongoing symptoms and would like a clearer understanding of their cause and nature.
- Have received different diagnoses or are uncertain whether a previous diagnosis adequately describes your experiences.
- Have participated in treatment but continue to experience significant difficulties.
- Would like recommendations to guide counselling or other mental health care.
- Have several overlapping concerns that require a more comprehensive evaluation.
You do not need to have a diagnosis before seeking an assessment.
The Assessment Process
Initial Consultation
The process begins with a discussion of your concerns and what you hope to understand or achieve through the assessment. We consider whether our services are appropriate for your needs and clarify the assessment’s scope, fees, and anticipated timeline.
Background Information and Informed Consent
Before proceeding, we explain the assessment process, confidentiality and its limits, and how the findings will be communicated.
With your consent, your psychologist may review relevant records, such as previous assessments, medical reports, or treatment summaries. Where appropriate, information from a treating professional or someone who knows you well may also contribute to the assessment.
Clinical Interview and Psychological Measures
The assessment includes a detailed clinical interview exploring your current symptoms, personal history, previous treatment, and present circumstances. We consider when your difficulties began, how they have changed over time, and their impact on your functioning.
Standardized psychological questionnaires are selected according to the assessment questions. These measures complement the interview and help your psychologist develop a fuller understanding of your experiences.
No special preparation is required. You are encouraged to describe your concerns openly and accurately, including your strengths, coping strategies, and existing supports.
Feedback and Recommendations
Following the assessment, your psychologist explains the findings, discusses any diagnoses, and provides individualized recommendations. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and consider how the findings relate to your experiences and treatment goals.
The assessment may also help clarify why previous treatment has had limited benefit and identify areas that warrant a different approach or further evaluation.
Written Report
The findings are summarized in a written report. Depending on the agreed scope, the report may include:
- Relevant background and treatment history.
- A description of current symptoms and their impact on daily functioning.
- Psychological assessment findings.
- Diagnostic conclusions, where appropriate.
- An explanation of factors contributing to or maintaining your difficulties.
- Recommendations for treatment, support, or further assessment.
With your consent, the report can be shared with your family physician, counsellor, or other treating professionals to support coordinated care.
An Individualized Approach
The purpose of assessment extends beyond identifying a diagnosis. We aim to develop a meaningful understanding of your difficulties in the context of your experiences, strengths, and circumstances.
Recommendations are tailored to your needs and may address approaches to psychotherapy, priorities for treatment, practical supports, or consultation with other health professionals. If the findings do not support a diagnosis, your psychologist will explain this and discuss appropriate next steps.
Assessment and Ongoing Treatment
Psychological assessment is a focused service that provides diagnostic clarification and direction for care. Ongoing counselling or treatment is arranged separately. The findings can help you and your treating professionals establish priorities and make informed decisions about treatment.
