ADHD Assessments
What to expect.
AnchorPointe Counselling Group provides psychological assessments for individuals seeking clarification about attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Our assessments examine attention, organization, impulsivity, and related concerns within the context of your history, current functioning, and overall psychological health.
The goal is to determine whether ADHD best explains your difficulties and provide practical recommendations for treatment and support.
Purpose of the Assessment
An ADHD assessment may be helpful if you experience persistent difficulties with:
- Maintaining attention or following through on tasks.
- Organizing activities, managing time, or meeting deadlines.
- Remembering appointments, responsibilities, or everyday items.
- Beginning tasks or completing projects.
- Managing restlessness or impulsive behaviour.
- Maintaining consistent performance at work, in education, or at home.
These difficulties can have several explanations. The assessment considers whether they reflect ADHD, another condition, or a combination of factors.
The Assessment Process
Initial Consultation
The process begins with a discussion of your concerns, assessment goals, and relevant background. We determine whether our services are appropriate for your needs and explain the assessment’s scope, fees, and anticipated timeline.
Background Information and Informed Consent
Before proceeding, we explain the assessment process, confidentiality and its limits, and how the findings will be communicated.
With your consent, your psychologist may review relevant records, including previous assessments, treatment summaries, or school reports. Information about childhood functioning is particularly useful because ADHD is a developmental condition, even when it is first identified in adulthood.
Where possible and appropriate, we may also seek information from someone familiar with your childhood or current functioning. If historical records or other sources are unavailable, your psychologist will discuss how this may affect the assessment.
Clinical Interview and Psychological Measures
The assessment includes a detailed interview exploring your developmental, educational, occupational, medical, and mental health history. We examine when your difficulties began, how they have changed over time, and how they affect different areas of your life.
Standardized questionnaires help assess ADHD symptoms and related concerns. A diagnosis is based on the combined clinical findings rather than a single questionnaire or test score.
The assessment also considers other factors that may contribute to attention and organizational difficulties, such as mood, anxiety, sleep, stress, substance use, or medical concerns. Additional assessment or consultation may be recommended when needed.
Feedback and Recommendations
Your psychologist explains the findings, discusses whether the evidence supports an ADHD diagnosis, and provides individualized recommendations. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and consider how the findings relate to your experiences.
Recommendations may include psychological treatment, strategies for organization and time management, changes to daily routines, or consultation with a medical professional about medication options.
Written Report
The findings are summarized in a written report, which may include:
- Relevant developmental and clinical history.
- Assessment findings and diagnostic conclusions.
- The impact of symptoms on daily functioning.
- Relevant strengths, coping strategies, and supports.
- Recommendations for treatment and practical support.
- Recommendations for further evaluation, where appropriate.
With your consent, the report can be shared with your family physician or other treating professionals to support coordinated care.
An Individualized Approach
People seek ADHD assessments for different reasons. Some have experienced longstanding difficulties, while others find that increased demands have made existing challenges more apparent.
Our approach considers both your difficulties and the strategies you have developed to manage them. Whether or not ADHD is diagnosed, the assessment aims to provide a clearer understanding of your concerns and useful direction for next steps.
Assessment and Treatment
The assessment provides diagnostic clarification and recommendations for care. Ongoing psychological treatment is arranged separately.
If medication is recommended for consideration, prescribing and medical monitoring must be provided by an appropriately qualified medical professional.
