Veterans Affairs Psychological Assessments

What to expect.

AnchorPointe Counselling Group provides comprehensive psychological assessments for individuals seeking to clarify and document mental health concerns in connection with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC). Assessments are conducted with professionalism, sensitivity, and respect for each individual’s service history and experiences.

Purpose of the Assessment

A psychological assessment examines the nature and severity of mental health symptoms, determines whether a psychological diagnosis is appropriate, and describes the impact of symptoms on daily functioning. Depending on the referral, the assessment may also address the relationship between a psychological condition and service-related experiences, and provide recommendations for treatment and support.

Concerns assessed may include posttraumatic stress, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and difficulties adjusting following service.

The Assessment Process

Initial Contact and Referral

The process begins with clarification of the assessment’s purpose and any referral requirements. Before scheduling, we review the information required, explain the assessment process, and clarify fees and applicable funding arrangements.

Records Review and Informed Consent

Your psychologist reviews relevant available documentation, which may include medical records, previous psychological assessments, and service-related information.

Before the assessment proceeds, we explain its purpose and scope, confidentiality and its limits, and the arrangements for sharing the completed report. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide informed consent.

Clinical Interview and Psychological Measures

The assessment includes a detailed clinical interview addressing your background, service history, current symptoms, previous treatment, and present circumstances. Particular attention is given to how symptoms affect daily activities, relationships, employment, and participation in the community.

Standardized psychological questionnaires are also used to support diagnostic clarification and a comprehensive understanding of your functioning. No special preparation is required; you are encouraged to describe your experiences openly and accurately.

Assessment Report

Your psychologist integrates the interview findings, psychological test results, and available documentation into a written report. Depending on the referral questions, the report may include:

  • Relevant background and service history.
  • The nature, severity, and course of psychological symptoms.
  • Diagnostic findings.
  • The impact of symptoms on daily functioning.
  • An opinion regarding the relationship between the identified condition and service-related experiences.
  • Recommendations for treatment and support.

A Respectful and Individualized Approach

We recognize that discussing service-related experiences and mental health concerns can be challenging. The assessment is conducted sensitively, with clear explanations and opportunities to ask questions or request breaks.

Our role is to provide a balanced, evidence-based account of your psychological health, including areas of difficulty, retained abilities, and existing strengths and supports.

How the Assessment Is Used

The report provides clinical information that VAC may consider when reviewing a claim or planning services. Decisions regarding benefit eligibility and entitlement remain with VAC, and an assessment does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Psychological assessment is distinct from ongoing counselling or treatment, although the findings and recommendations may inform subsequent care.
